Bolivia\’s government has just announced a massive change for international travelers, signaling a concerted effort to revitalize its tourism sector. In a move to boost the national economy and attract foreign currency, Bolivia has officially lifted visa requirements for citizens of the United States, Israel, South Korea, and several European nations.

Who Can Now Travel Visa-Free to Bolivia?

The announcement, made by the Minister of Sustainable Tourism, Cultures, Folklore, and Gastronomy, Cintya Yáñez, confirms that citizens of the following countries no longer need a tourist visa to enter Bolivia:

• United States

• Israel

• South Korea

• South Africa

• European Nations: Bulgaria, Malta, Romania, Latvia, and Estonia

• United Arab Emirates

These citizens have been moved from the more restricted visa categories (Group 2 or Group 3) into Group 1, which requires no visa for entry as tourists. This is intended to drastically simplify the travel process and make Bolivia an accessible destination for millions of potential visitors.

The Economic Reason Behind the Change

The decision is a direct response to the significant economic losses suffered by the country after previous visa restrictions were imposed.

According to Minister Yáñez, the requirement of visas for U.S. citizens (reinstated in 2007) and Israeli citizens (imposed in 2014) resulted in staggering losses. Officials estimate that Bolivia lost approximately $900 million in potential tourist spending due to these restrictions.

For example, the number of U.S. tourists dropped sharply from 61,000 annually before the visa requirement to just 22,000 afterward.

Foreign Minister Fernando Aramayo explained that the primary goal is to \”redynamize the economy\” and ensure that the tourist dollars and euros currently being spent in neighboring countries like Peru and Chile begin flowing into Bolivia. The government expects this measure to generate immediate positive impacts across labor-intensive sectors such as gastronomy, hospitality, and guided tours, benefiting both urban and rural areas.
