A Day on the Ledge (The Chuspipata Start)

To most people, Bolivia’s El Camino de la Muerte is a high-speed checklist item to fly down on a mountain bike. But for me, from 1991 to 2010, it was simply the road home. I spent twenty years navigating these single-lane cliffs to build and run Hotel Esmeralda in Coroico, opening our doors right for Easter in 1994.

When the modern bypass highway opened in 2006, it transformed the region. The heavy trucks vanished, and I realized the best way to respect the history of this canyon wasn’t on wheels, but on foot. So, I started offering guided hikes. Here is exactly how we ran the perfect trekking day.

The Morning Climb: Leaving Coroico Behind

A proper hike of the Death Road doesn’t start at the top of the pass at La Cumbre. It starts early in the morning in the subtropical warmth of Coroico, where you hop into a vehicle with a seasoned local driver.

The drive up the mountain sets the entire tone for the day:

The Sunny Route: On dry, clear mornings, we would drive directly up the old dirt Death Road itself, giving hikers a thrilling preview of the sheer cliffs they were about to walk.
The Rainy Morning Alternative: If the Yungas woke up to heavy rain, safety came first. We would climb the mountain via the new paved highway, bypassing the slickest mud and rockfalls to drop us safely at the top.
But the mountain always has a surprise waiting. Just as we would reach Chuspipata around 10:00 AM, the clouds would suddenly lift and the sun would come out. In a matter of minutes, the gloomy, stressful rainy drive would dissolve into brilliant sunlight, revealing the vast, green canvas of the canyon below us. It was the ultimate green light from nature to lace up our boots and start the trek.

Either way, our destination was always Chuspipata—the official, unpaved gateway where the old road splits off into history.

The Monument at Chuspipata: The Ghosts of 1944

Right where the unpaved road begins stands a small, somber stone monument that many tourists walk past without a second thought. But this isn't a memorial for a car crash. This marker stands in memory of a dark chapter in Bolivia's political history: the November 1944 Fusilamientos de Chuspipata.

During the regime of Gualberto Villarroel, a group of political prisoners and revolutionaries were brought up to this exact freezing ledge, executed, and cast over the sheer 300-meter cliff into the jungle below. As the morning fog swirls around the stone, it acts as a silent witness to the ghosts of the road's past. It is a stark reminder to every hiker that this beautiful canyon has always demanded absolute respect, long before it ever became a tourist trail.

The Yungas Road was built in the 1930s during the Chaco War by Paraguayan prisoners.

The Trek Begins: Chuspipata to the Yungas

Dropping out of the vehicle at Chuspipata, the air is crisp, the fog is often thick, and the mountain is completely silent. This is where your boots hit the gravel.

Because we start at Chuspipata, you are immediately immersed in the most dramatic scenery the road has to offer. Unlike mountain bikers who race past the scenery at 40 km/h, hiking allows you to slow down and truly absorb the psychological gauntlet of the landscape. You have the time to look over the guardrail-free edge, to see the historic cross markers honoring those lost in the 90s, and to watch the alpine vegetation slowly give way to lush, green jungle as you descend.

As the hike progresses, the air grows warmer and more humid. Soon, you hear it before you see it: a roaring waterfall cascading directly onto the dirt path.

When my hiking groups walk underneath that freezing mountain water, I always stop them to share what it was like in the 1990s. I point to the narrowest ledge and tell them about driving my supply truck right through that waterfall. In those days, you drove on the left-hand cliff edge so you could watch your tires relative to the abyss. You would hit these curves blasting your horn blindly into the mist, with Bolivian pan flute music playing on the radio, praying a massive bus wasn’t barreling around the corner from La Paz.

This exact roaring cascade is also where the legendary and tragic 1980s bus crash occurred, an event that deeply marked the road’s lethal reputation. Walking it today is peaceful, but the ghosts of that adrenaline—and that history—still linger under the falling water.

The Finish Line: From the Ledge to the Oasis

After a thrilling 12-kilometer foot trek that takes you past the tightest, most hair-raising spots on the old road, your boots finally leave the gravel. To ensure a comfortable and safe journey for the rest of the descent, we hop back into our accompanying support vehicle.

From there, we drive down toward the small town of Yolosa. As the vehicle descends, you can physically feel the mountain air transforming. The cool mist completely gives way to lush, tropical warmth as the road transitions through beautiful scenery—winding directly past vibrant banana groves and the very first mandarin plantations of the valley.

Once past Yolosa, the road leads us to our final destination: Hotel Esmeralda in Coroico. Stepping into the hotel grounds after that journey feels like entering an entirely different universe. As the dust and adrenaline fade, you get to sit pool-side in a true subtropical paradise, cold drink in hand, looking back up at the massive green canyon walls you just conquered.

The German Spark: Foundations of the Cacao Movement

The transformation of Sapecho into a cacao powerhouse traces back to the 1960s and 70s. During this era, the Bolivian government sought to colonize the Yungas and Alto Beni regions to alleviate population pressure in the Altiplano. However, the settlers—mostly Aymara and Quechua highlanders—faced the daunting challenge of farming in a tropical environment entirely foreign to them.

Recognizing the need for specialized knowledge and infrastructure, German non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and developmental agencies, notably those supported by the German government (such as the DED and later GIZ), stepped in. These organizations brought more than just funding; they brought technical expertise in tropical agroforestry. The German intervention was pivotal in establishing the first organized cacao nurseries. They focused on a model that favored the Arriba and Forastero varieties, ensuring that the crops were not only productive but also adapted to the specific microclimate of the Sapecho basin.

Rather than encouraging individual large-scale plantations, they fostered the idea that smallholders could achieve economy of scale by working together. This philosophy laid the groundwork for what would eventually become “El Ceibo,” the first federation of cacao cooperatives in Bolivia, which remains a global gold standard for fair trade and organic production.

The cacao plant (Theobroma cacao) is a demanding resident of the Sapecho landscape. In this region, the plants thrive under a system known as “Successional Agroforestry.” Unlike monoculture plantations that strip the land, Sapecho’s cacao grows beneath a canopy of taller trees—mahogany, cedar, and fruit trees like citrus and banana.

The botanical story starts in the nurseries, where seeds are carefully selected from “mother trees” known for their resistance to diseases like “Witches’ Broom” (Moniliophthora perniciosa). The German-led initiatives taught farmers the art of grafting, allowing them to combine the hardy rootstocks of local varieties with the high-quality flavor profiles of premium clones.

In Sapecho, the harvest is a seasonal rhythm. When the pods turn from green or deep purple to a vibrant yellow or orange, they are hand-picked. The “beans”—actually seeds encased in a sweet, white mucilage—are extracted and then undergo the most critical phase: fermentation. In Sapecho, this is done in wooden boxes for five to seven days. This process, perfected through decades of technical training, is where the complex chocolate aromas are born. What began as a subsistence crop for highland migrants has evolved into a sophisticated commercial operation. The sale of Sapecho’s cacao is dominated by the cooperative structure. By bypassing traditional middlemen (rescatistas), farmers are able to retain a much higher percentage of the final sale price.

The “Organic” and “Fair Trade” certifications, heavily encouraged by early European partners, have been the keys to unlocking these markets. Consumers in Europe are willing to pay a premium for Sapecho cacao because it represents environmental conservation and social equity. Bolivia now ranks as a significant producer of “fine or flavor” cacao according to the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), with the Alto Beni region, centered around Sapecho, providing the lion’s share of this high-quality output.

The export story of Sapecho is inextricably linked to the “El Ceibo” brand. In the late 1980s, Sapecho’s farmers took a bold step: they stopped selling raw beans to multinational corporations and began processing their own chocolate. Today, Sapecho cacao is exported to elite markets in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and the United States.

Take a trip back to 2006 with me to the mining regions of Guanay and Tipuani, Bolivia. This was a family expedition involving cable carts, river boats, and the incredible landscapes of the Yungas. These photos capture the entrance of the underground mine just months before it was closed due to a major landslide.

Travel photography is often about capturing a moment in time, but every so often, those moments become historical records. Looking back at my archives from 2006, I found a series of photos that feel like they belong to a different era of the Andes. This was a time before paved highways reached deep into the Amazon basin, before GPS was in every pocket, and when the gold mining towns of Guanay and Tipuani felt like the true “Wild West” of Bolivia.

This wasn’t just a scouting mission for my blog; it was a weekend shared with good friends and family. I was joined by Thomas and his children, along with my son Michael. We set out from my home at the time — the Hotel Esmeralda in Coroico — and descended into the humid, high-stakes world of the gold rush.

The Descent into Guanay

The journey from the cool, cloud-forested heights of Coroico down to Guanay is a transition of both climate and culture. As you drop in altitude, the air thickens, the vegetation turns a deeper shade of emerald, and the quiet mountain life gives way to the frantic energy of the mining districts.

Our base for the first day was the home of Edgar Kann in Guanay. Edgar was a fixture in the local mining scene, and his hospitality provided us with a front-row seat to the industry that fuels this entire region. Guanay sits at the confluence of the Mapiri and Tipuani rivers, a strategic point where the wealth of the mountains is washed down in the form of gold dust and nuggets.

Crossing the Divide: The Canastilla
One of the most visceral memories of that first day—and a highlight for the kids—was our visit to the mining company’s site. In the Yungas, infrastructure is often a matter of necessity over elegance. To reach the site, we had to cross the river using a cable cart, or canastilla.
There is a specific kind of thrill that comes from hanging in a metal cage suspended by a steel cable, with the brownish, churning waters of the Rio Mapiri rushing beneath you. It’s a moment where you realize how much the people here rely on their own ingenuity to conquer the geography. As a photographer, the perspective from the middle of the river, suspended in mid-air, offered a unique angle of the valley that no bridge could ever provide.

After the adrenaline of the crossing, we settled in for a “hardy lunch” at a riverside patio. The architecture of the region is functional: wooden supports and metal shingle roofs. I can still remember the sound of that afternoon—the distant roar of the river and the occasional “ping” of the metal roof expanding under the relentless tropical sun. It was the perfect moment of stillness in a region that is usually defined by movement and labor.

The Ghost of the Underground Mine
Later that afternoon, we visited the entrance of a massive underground mine. At the time, it was an impressive feat of engineering, a dark maw in the side of the mountain where men sought their fortunes deep within the rock.
We didn’t know it then, but we were standing at the entrance of a site that was about to be reclaimed by nature. Later that same year, a massive landslide occurred a few miles upstream. The mountain literally moved, altering the course of the landscape and forcing the permanent closure of the mine. Looking at the photos in my Flickr album, you can see the entrance as it was—a gateway to the earth that no longer exists. It serves as a somber reminder of how fragile human enterprise is in the face of the Andes’ geological power.

Up the Rio Tipuani: The Spalt and the Rapids
The second day of our trip took us even deeper into the wilderness. We traded our land vehicles for a small, canoe-sized boat to navigate the Rio Tipuani. This river is legendary in Bolivia; for centuries, it has been synonymous with gold.

Navigating a small boat up-river against the current is an art form. The boatmen know every eddy and every hidden rock. We were heading toward a specific geological feature—a “spalt” or a narrow split in the mountain where the river is squeezed between towering walls of stone.
For a photographer, this was the “Holy Grail” of the trip. The rapids surged through the narrow gap, creating a white-water chaos that contrasted beautifully with the rock. But the most striking detail was the vegetation. Huge ferns overhung the rapids, clinging to the vertical rock faces and dripping with the spray from the river. The light filtered down through the canopy, creating a prehistoric, “Lost World” atmosphere. It was a place of intense natural beauty, tucked away in a corner of the world that few travelers ever get to see.
Reflections on a Changing Landscape
The trip concluded with the long climb back up the mountainside to Coroico. Arriving back at the Hotel Esmeralda, looking out over the velvet-green ridges of the Yungas, the contrast was sharp. We had spent 48 hours in the grit, mud, and raw power of the mining camps, and returning to the “City of Eternal Spring” felt like returning from a different century.
Looking at these photos today, I am struck by how much has changed. My son Michael and Thomas’s kids have grown up; the mine we visited is buried under tons of earth; and the roads to Guanay are better than they used to be. Yet, the spirit of the region remains. The gold is still there, the rivers still roar, and the ferns still hang over the Tipuani rapids.
This 2006 expedition was more than just a weekend getaway. It was part of the foundation of what ViaAndinaTravel is today: a quest to document the routes, the people, and the fleeting moments of beauty in the high Andes and the deep valleys.

Our trip to Uyuni and back to La Paz had been a memorable one, following our excursion to the salt flats and lithium fields. Once in Uyuni at the american place indulging pizza and beer and waiting for our semi-cama bus to arrive, but the bus we boarded turned out to be old and chilly, with icicles hanging from the railings. We got pissed because we had no other option but to board a night bus from Uyuni to La Paz in Bolivia.

Our journey on the night bus turned out to be a complete catastrophe. The vehicle was decrepit and poorly maintained, with shattered windows and damaged seats. The driver was reckless, hurtling around tight turns and speeding through narrow mountain passes with little thought for the safety of his passengers. As the night progressed, the bus became more congested with individuals and their belongings, creating an unpleasant and hazardous situation.

Despite numerous warnings and complaints from the passengers, the driver refused to slow down or make any changes. I was terrified, clutching onto my seatbelt for dear life, expecting the worst at every turn. To make matters worse, the bus driver was slightly drunk and seemed to be struggling to keep his eyes open. It was hard to imagine how he was still able to drive the bus. Along with his driving skills, the condition of the road was also questionable, with potholes and bumps making the ride even more uncomfortable.
