Once past Yolosa, the road leads us to our final destination: Hotel Esmeralda in Coroico. Stepping into the hotel grounds after that journey feels like entering an entirely different universe. As the dust and adrenaline fade, you get to sit pool-side in a true subtropical paradise, cold drink in hand, looking back up at the massive green canyon walls you just conquered.

The Pre-1994 Era: A Country of Islands

Before the mid-90s, traveling through Bolivia was an exercise in patience and isolation. Moving between cities meant entering a total communications vacuum. If you needed to reach someone, you had two choices: wait in a long line at a physical ENTEL office for a landline connection, or rely on the static-heavy world of CB radios.

I lived this reality firsthand while living in Coroico. In 1991, when I started building the Hotel Esmeralda, the isolation was absolute. Back then, transport was incredibly scarce; during the 80s and early 90s, Coroico might only have one bus a day—or even just one a week. On Sundays, everything depended on the Flota Yungueña.

On any other day, travel was a true adventure. These heavy machines would rumble down to Yolosa, leaving you with the final, dusty 7 km (approx. 4.3 miles) drive up to Coroico.

In the Yungas, communication only happened at night. During the day, solar interference and atmospheric conditions made signals impossible. We would huddle around radios after dark, listening to the crackle and hiss, waiting for a window of clarity to send a simple message: \”We arrived safely\” or \”The road is washed out.\”

Muchas veces la única forma de moverse era ir \”al apa\” en camiones gigantes y viejos que en ese tiempo ni dirección hidráulica tenían. Esas máquinas pesadas bajaban hasta Yolosa, y de ahí te quedaba el último pique de 7 km para subir a Coroico.

En los Yungas, la cuestión era brígida: en el día no había señal por la interferencia solar, así que la comunicación era solo nocturna. Nos juntábamos alrededor de la radio en la noche, entre puros ruidos y estática, esperando que la señal se pusiera \”bacán\” para avisar que habíamos llegado bien o que el camino estaba cortado.

El Transporte: Puro \”Lejano Oeste\”

En ese tiempo, viajar era mucho más barato pero más incierto que la fregar. Las micros y camiones eran como el negocio propio de los choferes; se paraban en cualquier lado a cargar fletes no programados o a subir pasajeros por fuera para ganarse unas lucas extra. Como no había celulares, uno no sabía si había bloqueo hasta que llegaba al lugar y veía las tremendas piedras en medio del camino.

Desde el 94, cuando se instaló la red de celulares, la cosa cambió del cielo a la tierra. Take a trip back to 2006 with me to the mining regions of Guanay and Tipuani, Bolivia. This was a family expedition involving cable carts, river boats, and the incredible landscapes of the Yungas. Travel photography is often about capturing a moment in time, but every so often, those moments become historical records. Looking back at my archives from 2006, I found a series of photos that feel like they belong to a different era of the Andes. The Descent into Guanay

The journey from the cool, cloud-forested heights of Coroico down to Guanay is a transition of both climate and culture. As you drop in altitude, the air thickens, the vegetation turns a deeper shade of emerald, and the quiet mountain life gives way to the frantic energy of the mining districts.

Our base for the first day was the home of Edgar Kann in Guanay. Edgar was a fixture in the local mining scene, and his hospitality provided us with a front-row seat to the industry that fuels this entire region. Guanay sits at the confluence of the Mapiri and Tipuani rivers, a strategic point where the wealth of the mountains is washed down in the form of gold dust and nuggets.

Crossing the Divide: The Canastilla
One of the most visceral memories of that first day—and a highlight for the kids—was our visit to the mining company’s site. In the Yungas, infrastructure is often a matter of necessity over elegance. To reach the site, we had to cross the river using a cable cart, or canastilla.

For a photographer, this was the “Holy Grail” of the trip. The rapids surged through the narrow gap, creating a white-water chaos that contrasted beautifully with the rock. But the most striking detail was the vegetation. Huge ferns overhung the rapids, clinging to the vertical rock faces and dripping with the spray from the river. The light filtered down through the canopy, creating a prehistoric, “Lost World” atmosphere. It was a place of intense natural beauty, tucked away in a corner of the world that few travelers ever get to see.
Reflections on a Changing Landscape
The trip concluded with the long climb back up the mountainside to Coroico. Arriving back at the Hotel Esmeralda, looking out over the velvet-green ridges of the Yungas, the contrast was sharp. We had spent 48 hours in the grit, mud, and raw power of the mining camps, and returning to the “City of Eternal Spring” felt like returning from a different century.
Looking at these photos today, I am struck by how much has changed. My son Michael and Thomas’s kids have grown up; the mine we visited is buried under tons of earth; and the roads to Guanay are better than they used to be. Yet, the spirit of the region remains. The gold is still there, the rivers still roar, and the ferns still hang over the Tipuani rapids.
