You’re exploring the Andes with the man who built the finish line.” For twenty years (1991–2010), Bolivia’s infamous “Death Road” wasn’t a tourist attraction to me—it was my daily driveway. Long before making notebooks, I navigated its treacherous waterfalls and single-lane cliffs to build Hotel Esmeralda in Coroico, opening our doors for Easter in 1994. As adventure tourism boomed, I invented the original “Biker Shower & Buffet System,” turning my hotel into the ultimate recovery oasis for premier outfits like Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking and Bolivia Downhill.

When the modern highway opened in 2006, I pivoted to guiding deep, historical foot treks along the old pass. My journey later took me to Santa Cruz to run a café, and eventually to the coast of Arica to manage cabins and a restaurant right in front of Las Machas beach. Following the pandemic, I launched ViaAndinaTravel to share the true, rugged spirit of these mountains with travelers seeking authentic adventures.
